Happy 100th Birthday Roger Tory Peterson

Here is a press release I just received

Happy 100th Birthday to
Roger Tory Peterson
August 28, 1908

Painter, writer, teacher, scientist,
inventor of the modern field guide

The man who invented the modern field guide and America's foremost naturalist was Roger Tory Peterson. On August 28, 2008 please join nature lovers everywhere in celebrating his 100th birthday!

Although Mr. Peterson died in 1996, his legacy lives on at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York. The Institute houses a 10,000 book library, over 150,000 slides, limited-edition prints, film reels as well as thousands of original pieces of artwork in its museum, which is open daily to the public. In addition, personal memorabilia are on view from his travels around the world including 17 trips to Antarctica to see penguins. In fact, Roger was known to his friends as "King Penguin".

But the most important task of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute is encouraging kids to get out and observe the natural world around them. "We want to ignite a passion for nature in kids that will last a lifetime" says Jim Berry, president of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.
Roger Tory Peterson was inspired by his 7th grade teacher, Mrs. Blanche Hornbeck, who had her students join the Junior Audubon Club. She encouraged Roger's drawing efforts and provided the "spark" that changed his life. She told the class "Your objective will be to learn all you can about birds, be kind to birds and protect them."

Today the Roger Tory Peterson Institute is deeply involved in teaching the teachers as well as the kids. "The future guardians of our environment may well be the 10 or 11 year olds that discover a passion for birds or frogs or butterflies today" says Mr. Berry. "Think of the Institute as the Nation's Nature Center. We are carrying on the legacy of Dr. Peterson by helping kids to experience that sense of wonder in nature. We are laying the foundation and investing in the future by focusing on the children. In order to protect wildlife and the habitats that support it, people first have to know what they are protecting."

Roger Tory Peterson Institute and MuseumJamestown, New York - Birthplace of Roger Tory Peterson
The Institute awards the prestigious Blanche Hornbeck Award for Excellence in Nature Education to teachers who possess an infectious enthusiasm that excites and teaches others. Applications for the 2009 awards are now available.
In conjunction with the Roger Tory Peterson Centennial Year, two new books have been published. Roger Tory Peterson: A Biography, by Douglas Carlson is a critical look at the man and his art while Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson, by Elizabeth J. Rosenthal is a recollection of the man by those who knew him best.

10 Things You Can Do To CelebrateRoger Tory Peterson's 100th Birthday

1. Take a child out for a morning walk in nature. Find out what they are passionate about! You may want to encourage them with a field guide for kids or one of the Peterson Field Guides.

2. Help your local Audubon Club or nature group set up a BioBlitz -- see how many living species of plants and animals you can find in a 24-hour period.

3. Become a Friend of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Why not help continue their important mission by sending $100 in honor of Roger Tory Peterson's 100th birthday! The address is RTPI, 311 Curtis St., Jamestown, NY 14701. Make a secure gift on their website, www.rtpi.org.

And watch for the completely redesigned web site next month! Do you know someone who is home-schooling their kids? Make sure they know about this web site!

National Buffalo Wing Festival

One of my favorite summertime festivals is the National Buffalo Wing Festival that takes place over Labor Day Weekend. If you love chicken wings, you don’t want to miss this event. I have been to every one of them and they are a real hoot and very tongue in cheek. It’s insane, but tons of fun! Bring plenty of money and antacids. The 7th annual festival takes place Saturday August 30 from 12-9pm and Sunday August 31 from 12-7pm. Admission is $5 person (under 8 free) and food tickets are $1 each (you get three chicken wings for 2 tickets). Buffalo waterfront

Buffalo waterfront

If the weather is nice, head down to the Buffalo waterfront. Visit the newly renovated Naval and Serviceman Park and the commercial slip, where your can learn a bit about the early history of the Erie Canal.

The Erie Basin Marina is a great place to take a walk. There’s even a small beach for sand play and sunning (no swimming, however, as the water has dangerous currents). The view from the observation tower at the end of the marina is great. If hunger strikes, the Hatch is a great spot for a bite to eat, just watch out for the seagulls!

Waiting for your ship to come in along the Welland Canal

The perfect place to wait for your ship to come in is along the Welland Canal in Southern Ontario, Canada, about a 45 minute drive from Buffalo. Last week my daughter and I drove along the canal and found a lot of interesting things to do.

We started in Port Colborne, which has one of the world’s largest locks. We watched a ship enter the lock from lock #8 Park. There are also a number of delightful shops and restaurants along West Street, which overlooks the canal.

In Welland there are over 20 murals that depict early canal history located throughout the downtown area. We also discovered the Seaway Mall, which has lots of nice shops. In Thorold, stop by the Lock 7 Viewing Complex and learn the legend behind the kissing Rock. Between Thorold and St. Catharines, you’ll pass the twinned flight locks 4, 5, and 6.

One of the best places to view ships in the canal is at the Welland canals center at Lock 3. This complex has a raised platform to see the entire lock, as well as a couple of museums, a gift shop, food concessions and tourism information.

POLISH HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATES SPIRIT OF THANKSGIVING

Festival to Feature Special Mass, Polish Food, Music

Buffalo, New York – The 29th annual Dozynki Harvest Festival at Corpus Christi Church in Buffalo will take place on August 23 and 24. This joyful celebration, which dates to the middle ages, is the Polish equivalent of America’s Thanksgiving holiday. In Poland, this event marks the end of the wheat harvest. At Corpus Christi, Dozynki is an opportunity to give thanks for all manner of blessings.

The heart of the Polish Harvest Festival is to bring people together in a spirit of gratitude and appreciation to God for all we have been given. The uniqueness of this celebration is expressed during the offertory procession during Sunday's Dozynki Mass when a specially baked bread is presented along with a wreath made of grains and wildflowers along with other fruits of the land. Special liturgical music for the occasion will be performed by Fr. Anzelm Chalupka, organist Bruce Woody and the Corpus Christi Choir.

This year’s Dozynki Festival will offer a chance to enjoy homemade Polish food and drink, polka, classical and pop music, an opportunity to purchase handmade religious and folk items, participate in historic church tours, and take part in many other activities. The Dozynki Mass of Thanksgiving will be offered on Sunday, August 24 at 11:30a.m. The festival opens on Saturday, August 23 at 11:30 a.m. with a Farmers' Market and a Flea Market. Pork and beef rollup dinners will be available on Saturday from 3-7p.m. The sounds of “Al Kania’s Polka Band” will fill the air on Saturday afternoon, while “Those Idiots” will entertain the crowd on Saturday evening under the big tent.

On Sunday afternoon, the big tent will feature music by Joe Macielag's Pic-A-Polka Band and a performance by the Krakowiacy Dancers of Eugenia's Dance Studio. Chicken dinners will be available on Sunday from 12:30-6:00p.m. At 4:30p.m. pianist Ivan Docenko will perform Chopin and Paderewski in the church, followed by “Diva by Diva” star Mary Kate O'Connell singing sacred and secular songs.

This year a raffle will be held for two round-trip airfares to Poland, courtesy of the owners of JABCO General Store at the Broadway Market. Theme baskets and chances to win other prizes will also be available. Admission is free and all proceeds support the church’s historic restoration. Raffle tickets are available at JABCO and through the church at 716/896-1050 or Vicki at 716/812-2524.

Corpus Christi Church was recently designated a New York State Landmark and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Phase I of the church’s restoration will begin later this month, with repair of the magnificent Rose Window above the choir loft. Fundraising is currently underway to match a grant in the amount of $450,000 from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund for restoration of the church roof and bell/clock tower.

Corpus Christi Church is located at 199 Clark St. in Buffalo, one block east of the Broadway Market.

Calling all chefs

Chef-to-Farm Experience
Monday, August 18th 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Feed Your Soul Buffalo is a culinary tourism initiative showcasing exciting Western New York gastronomic adventures that feature the bounty that is our region’s legacy.

Feed Your Soul has just added a tour of area farms to its roster—designed for Buffalo-area chefs with inquisitive minds and a passion for fresh, sustainably farmed produce, dairy products and heritage breed meat.

Feed Your Soul’s owners, Sandy Starks and Christa Glennie Seychew, have seen the demand for locally grown products increase ten-fold over the last year. Their regular conversations with local chefs have led them to believe that a meeting of the minds between our area’s top chefs and most progressive farmers was needed. Together they have developed Feed Your Soul’s Chef-to-Farm Experience.

Feed Your Soul has worked hard to make this event affordable ($45) for chefs and eager restaurant staff stationed at every level of the cooking industry, from sous to saucier, from bus boy to commis. Starks and Seychew will receive no profit from this event. Rather they see it as something that must happen to help re-build Western New York’s broken food chain. Starks and Seychew are both very involved in the International Slow Food Movement and sit on the board of Slow Food Buffalo.

Personal invitations are being sent out to some of the area’s best chefs for this event, but Starks and Seychew hope to see students, diligent home cooks and restaurant owners on board for this affordable and enlightening all-day adventure.

Chef-to-Farm Experience, Monday, August 18th Join fellow chefs for a personal tour of some of Erie County's best farms. Participants will meet in the morning, board a bus perfectly sized for our small group and travel to Alden to visit Oles' Farm, a family-run CSA. From there we’ll venture on to Dayton, NY to Blossom Hill, a family farm that raises heritage breed cows and hogs. After a tour, a delicious picnic lunch with a focus on local foods will be served to us by Blossom Hill’s own Jo’el Drajem. Next we’ll stop in East Otto to visit Patrick Lango of White Cow Dairy whose award-winning yogurt and cheese products have graced the pages of major food magazines and newspapers. Finally, we’ll wind up our adventure at Native Offerings, one of the area's most progressive farms and a popular CSA with weekly drops in the city.

Chef-to-Farm is designed to allow passionate Buffalo-area chefs the opportunity to learn about current farming practices, experience WNY's unique agricultural landscape and to engage in one-on-one dialogue with the producers of some of WNY’s finest products. Plus, chefs will return to their kitchens with samples of the fantastic products and produce from some of our region's best farmers.

Feed Your Soul has many other exciting culinary adventures on the roster and in the works. All of our events are truly unique and have limited seating, so making reservations quickly is important! To learn more about Feed Your Soul Buffalo log onto www.FeedYourSoulBuffalo.com or call Christa Seychew at 716-812-1615.

On August 16-17 as part of the 2008 Dunkirk Lighthouse Festival and Craft Show, the Seaway Trail: Experience The Journey interactive display will provide festival visitors the opportunity to share their opinions about traveling the byway and to spin a wheel to win Seaway Trail branded products. The Marble Orchard in Lewiston

Here's a unique event coming up the next two weekends

For Immediate Release: July 15, 2008
From: Eva Nicklas, Lewiston Council on the Arts - 754-0166

The Marble Orchard: Star of Niagara
100 Years of Faith, Hope and Sheer Determination!

(Lewiston, NY) The Marble Orchard: Star of Niagara is a unique series of vignettes that tell the stories of the early Sisters of St. Francis. As part of the yearlong Centennial Celebration, the program will take place at Stella Niagara, 4421 Lower River Rd., located in the Town of Lewiston, on Sat., Aug. 16 at 7:00 PM, Sun. Aug. 17 at 2:00 PM, Sat., Aug. 23 at 7:00 PM and Sun., Aug. 24 at 2:00PM.

The audience will step back in time and experience what life was like 100 years ago for the founders of Stella Niagara, now a magnificent motherhouse, an institute for learning, a hospitality center, retirement home for the elderly sisters and a peace site.

In 1908, a handful of energetic and determined Franciscan Sisters left the noise and commotion of Buffalo for the quiet and calm of the March farm on River Road. There they built a convent and school. Armed with little more than faith and willpower, they battled the elements and extreme poverty with steadfast determination.

Set in the secluded and peaceful cemetery on the grounds of Stella Niagara, you will meet the early superior, Mother Leonarda. Tough, but with a heart of gold, she led the younger sisters through desperate times of poverty. In the difficult times, complaints were not heard and prayers were always answered. God did provide. Freddie the chauffeur drove 3 million miles without a single accident or traffic ticket. As the trusted keeper of the secrets, what was discussed in Freddie’s car, stayed in Freddie’s car! Father Heim served as chaplain at Stella for almost 40 years. He will recall what it was like to be a German priest in America during the war years. These stories, and more, will come to life thanks to the volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to the project.

The stories, painstakingly researched, grew out of Centennial Year collaboration between Lewiston Council on the Arts and the Sisters of St. Francis. Admission is $10 adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets will be sold at the door.

RE: What's NEW at the 42nd Annual Lewiston Art Festival?

(Lewiston) Lewiston’s reputation as a thriving arts community and cultural epicenter is due in no small part to the Lewiston Art Festival. Now in it’s 42nd year, the festival has been named “Top Cultural Destinations,” First Sunday Magazine; “Summer Festival Showcase Event,” Bi-National Niagara Tourism Alliance; and “Top 100 Attractions Along the Seaway Trail,” by Journey Magazine.

On August 9 & 10 from 10 am to 6 pm , the prestigious event will showcase the work of more than 200 professional and student artists from across the U.S. and Southern Ontario in various media including; painting (acrylic, watercolor & oils), drawing, photography, sculpture, ceramics, wood, fiber, graphic arts and jewelry. “Modern” Art Awards, sponsored by Modern Corporation, totaling more than $5,000, will be awarded in 8 categories.

Our expansion into Academy Park continues with the addition of delicious new food vendors in a larger food court and the Brickyard Beer Tent where you can relax and enjoy a cold one in the festive atmosphere. On Saturday we’ll share the park with the Cataract Cruisers and there’ll be lots of good music scheduled for the Academy Park band shell. Take advantage of the new free shuttle service that will take you from Academy Park to the River with stops all along the way so you don’t miss a thing!

New this year, a more pedestrian-friendly layout will make the popular WNY High School Chalk Walk Competition the centerpiece of Center St. which will close to cars between 4th & 6th streets. On Saturday, watch the chalk fly as teams of talented student artists create spectacular murals depicting their interpretation of this year’s theme, "200 Years of Diversity" to commemorate Niagara County's Bi-Centennial. Ten regional high schools are scheduled to compete for “Arts Are Key” awards, generously sponsored by KeyBank. You get to be the judge for the People’s Choice Award, so be sure to vote for your favorite mural. Judging takes place about 4:00 PM. Chalkwalk sponsors include KeyBank and Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

The focus on youth continues on College Alley where the work of high school and college students will be featured in its new 5th St. location. On Sunday, you can watch artists at work as students from Mickey’s Art Works paint and exhibit their work throughout the day.

There will be lots of opportunities for audience participation when kids of all ages are invited to make their very own fish art at the ArtZone, a hands-on space sponsored by First Niagara Bank and located on the corner of 5th and Center Streets. On Sunday from noon to 4:00 PM the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University hosts a fish windsock “Make & Take” activity.

A must-see for everyone at the festival? Demonstrations by world class chainsaw carvers. With engines screaming and sawdust streaming, two Masters of the Chainsaw will join us for weekend residencies, creating masterpieces before your very eyes. Don’t miss Rick Pratt in the Lewiston Courtyard and a very special “Chainsaw Chick” who will be carving in Academy Park. This is ‘performance art’ at its best!

There’ll something fishy going on all weekend... Two Soul Salmon sculptures done by Lewiston Porter art students will be unveiled and on display during the weekend. The first one, a male salmon, was covered with American and Canadian pennies as a reminder of our shared river border. The second salmon, a female, is embellished with coins from around the world that were donated by the community. This dramatic pair will be sited together at Artpark after the art festival

Don’t forget to stop by the TWO Information Booths, (one at Key Bank and the other up near Academy Park) and pick up this years colorful Art Festival t-shirt which features "La Gytara Mariposa" (the Butterfly Guitar) by artist, Hugo Rodriguez. “Lewiston Landmarks” limited edition print by Michael LaDuca will also be available. The framed prints are $225. As always, street musicians and performers are welcome to add their festive ambiance to the show.

Grape County Week in Chautauqua County

Below are a couple of press releases I recently received. It looks like a fun week!

America’s Grape Country Week Celebration Set for August 9-17

Westfield, NY – The Chautauqua Lake Erie Wine Trail and Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association announce a celebration of regional flavors in America’s Grape Country, August 9-17, 2008. The nine day event kicks off with the America’s Grape Country Wine Festival at the Dunkirk Fairgrounds, August 9-10 followed by a week filled with local produce, culinary specials, winery tours, and epicurean delights. The celebration compliments Chautauqua Institution’s week eight theme “What’s for Dinner? Food and Politics in the 21st Century.”

Starting the week, the America’s Grape Country Wine Festival will showcase some of New York State’s finest wines with live musical entertainment, food vendors, arts and crafts, a farmer’s market, and educational wine seminars. At 2 pm on Saturday, August 9th, artist, naturalist and educator, Mark Baldwin, will present a new Map of the Natural and Cultural History of the Eastern Lake Erie Grape Region. Reprints of the map will be available at the Wine Festival with donations supporting the Lake Erie Concord Grape Heritage Association, the grape and wine industries, and economic development efforts in the region.

An official Blessing of the Grapes will take place at 2:30 pm Wednesday, August 13th in Westfield’s Moore Park followed by a taste of regional flavors presented by Growers Cooperative. During Celebrate America’s Grape Country Week, several wineries along the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail will also offer special classes and demonstrations. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the wineries directly. Capping off the week will be a Local Food Heroes Event Cook-off and Tasting at the Westfield Farmer’s Market, a Peach Festival at Burch Farms in North East, PA, and Pesto Festo at Barlow’s Mill in Fredonia. A full schedule of the week’s events with winery listings and phone numbers can be found at www.americasgrapecountry.com.

On Monday, August 11, Vetter Vineyards in Westfield will offer a free red wine tasting featuring their Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt paired with chocolate. Step into history on Tuesday with a visit to South Shore Wine Company in North East, PA at noon and 2 o’clock for tours of the unique underground wine cave and cellar. First established in 1864, South Shore was Erie County's First Commercial Winery. Penn Shore Winery in North East will also offer a lesson in Champagne at 10 am, 2 and 4 pm on Tuesday.

Quincy Cellars will host a food and wine pairing demonstration on Wednesday, August 13th at 12, 3, and 5 pm. The Ripley winery will open its full scale commercial kitchen to demonstrate techniques used at the restaurant at Quincy Cellars and how to best pair wines with menu items. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 716-736-2021 or visiting www.quincycellars.com.

Johnson Estate Winery will present Vineyard Walking Tours and Tastings on Wednesday, August 13th at noon and 4 pm and on Friday, August 15th at 10 am and 2 and 4 pm. The 200 plus acre Johnson Farm is nearly a century old and its winery, nearly 50 years old, is the state's oldest farm or "estate" winery. Hosted by Vineyard Manager, Rob Guzzettta and Winemaker, Jeff Murphy, the walking tours will highlight a number of the vineyards that produce award-winning wines from 115 acres of vineyards and twelve varieties of grapes. Tour goers will sample selected wines while visiting the vineyards and will learn about the unique soil composition, micro-climate, history, and future visions of the winery.

The blueberries will be ripe at Blueberry Sky Farm and Winery in Ripley where visitors can pick their own off the bushes. For an evening out, Merritt Estate Winery in Forestville will present America’s Picnic, Tuesday – Friday from 6-9 pm. A full picnic menu will be available including hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, tuna salad, corn on the cob, pop, wine and beer. “Rick and Mick” will provide live acoustical guitar music for entertainment.

On Saturday, August 16th, the Westfield Farmer's Market will host a "Local Food Heroes Cook-Off" to celebrate local farmers and the chefs who seek out the finest fresh fruit and vegetables grown in Chautauqua County. Four local chefs will create appetizers, entrees, and desserts using products from the area. They will also pair their food with local wines. Tickets for tasting samples and voting will be available at the event.

Visit Peachy Days Saturday and Sunday at Burch Farms Country Market for everything Peach including farm fresh peach pie, peach jelly, peach bread, peach parfaits, sliced peaches to put on biscuits & shortcake, ice cream with fresh peaches on top, baskets of Farm Fresh Peaches to eat or stop by the Wine Shop and sample some Peach Wine.

Stop by the Pesto Festo, Sunday, August 17th for a taste of all kinds of pesto along with wine tasting by Liberty Vineyards, music by Viol Habits, contra dancing, wagon rides, walking tours, and games. YB Normal Farms and Graystone Nature Preserve will be on hand with some alpacas and chickens.

In addition to special tours and presentations, several regional restaurants will join the America’s Grape Country Week celebration with tasting menus, nightly specials or daily features prepared with local produce and wine. Participating restaurants include Webb’s Captain’s Table and La Fleur in Mayville, The White Inn in Fredonia, The Royal Court Dining Room at Peek’n Peak Resort & Spa in Findley Lake, and Sapore in Westfield.

The Lake Erie Grape Region is home to America’s native grapes. With 30,000 vineyard acres, this is the largest grape growing region in the United States outside of California and the oldest Concord grape growing region in the world!
